SEL Assessment Options

There are many companies who provide assessment software/services for measuring your students' current Social and Emotional skills. In the same way that assessment is important for understanding students' academic learning, it is also important for understanding students' social and emotional learning.

Here are a few programs:

Aperture Education

From their site:

The DESSA Minis are very brief 8-item screener and progress monitor forms available in four equivalent versions.

The DESSA is comprised of 72 items.

The DESSA-High School Edition (DESSA-HSE) is comprised of 43 items.

The DESSA-Second Step Edition (DESSA-SSE) is comprised of 36 items directly aligned to the Second Step Curricula.

Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health

Early Childhood Assessment

DECA is an assessment that evaluates factors associated with resilience in preschool children. The assessment checklist can be completed by both parents and teachers, in either English or Spanish, and evaluates the presence of 27 positive behaviors common in preschool children (along with ten problem behaviors, which are not a focus here but potentially may be important in certain situations). Devereux partners with Aperture Education (above) to reach school age children.

Social Emotional Assets and Resilience Scales™

Purpose: Assesses positive social-emotional attributes of children and adolescents

Format: Paper and pencil, Online administration and scoring via PARiConnect, Software

Age range: 5 years to 18 years

Time: 20 minutes

Key constructs appear to be: responsibility, social competence, empathy, and self-regulation

Social Skills Improvement System SSIS Rating Scales

(SSIS Rating Scales)

The Social Skills Improvement System (SSIS) Rating Scales enable targeted assessment of individuals and small groups to help evaluate social skills, problem behaviors, and academic competence.

Scores/Interpretation: Social Skills, Problem Behaviors, and Academic Competence scales - Standard scores and percentile ranks; Subscales - Behavior Levels (below average, average, above average); Items - Frequency and Importance ratings point to behaviors that may require intervention.

Age range: 3:0 - 18:0

Reading Level: Parent - 5th grade; Student - 2nd grade
