Integrating SEL into your History or Social Studies Class: Implicit Bias

I found this to be an outstanding example of emergent curriculum: When Middle School Students Think Like Historians

This project allows the teaching of important SEL skills to be embedded directly into the core curricular assignment. After a few students noticed the role women often play in history texts, this teacher used the opportunity to kick off a research project for his students. The students chose to focus on addressing our implicit bias about gender. This then brought up a number of diversity related discussions, around power, agency, and representation. This activity in teaching students to think like a historian provides an excellent example of an activity with embedded SEL at its core.
